As Chair of Trustees you are responsible for:
• Setting the agenda for meetings
• Establishing good practice for meetings which are inclusive and on topic, sharing the workload appropriately among board members.
• Allocating trustees into working groups, currently Finance and HR • Building a clear future strategy along with senior staff
• Ensuring the Board operates within its charitable objectives and provides a clear strategic direction for the Charity
• Ensuring working policies are in place and updated appropriately • Line manage the Service Manager including regular Supervision meetings (bi-monthly) and Annual Appraisal.
• Ensure the board can regularly review, along with the service manager, major risks to the charity.
• Along with other trustees, act as an ambassador for the charity at public events, through church talks, fundraising and media opportunities.
• Recruit new trustees, along with other board members, as and when required.
• Take regular reports from senior staff on operational matters
• Take regular financial reports from the Treasurer
• Deal with complaints which may be escalated to the board
• Encourage healthy working relationships between board members and senior staff.
• Visit weekly staff meeting occasionally as appropriate
• Ensure requirements of Companies House and Charity Commission are met with annual reports.
• Keep up to date with changing Charity and Company regulations with respect to the sector in which Restore operates.
• Pray regularly for the board members, staff, volunteers, residents and activities.
• Maintain your own Christian values through fellowship, study and prayer.
Person Specification
In addition to the qualities required of a Trustee of the charity, the Chair must also meet the following requirements:-
Personal Qualities
• An active Christian faith
• Demonstrate a strong and visible passion and commitment to the charity, its strategic objectives and cause
• Strong leadership skills,
• Exhibit strong inter-personal and relationship building abilities and be comfortable in an ambassadorial role
• Demonstrate tact and diplomacy, with the ability to listen and engage effectively
• Good networking capabilities that can be utilised for the benefit of the charity
• Ability to foster and promote a collaborative team environment
• Ability to commit time to conduct the role well
Desirable Experience
• Experience of operating at a strategic leadership level within an organisation
• Experience of charity governance and working with or as part of a Board of Trustees
• Experience of external representation, delivering presentations and managing stakeholders
• Experience of chairing meetings and events Knowledge and skills
• Broad knowledge and understanding of charity and social sector current issues
• A broad understanding of charity finance issues
• Good understanding of charity governance issues
