Since its founding in 1993, International China Concern has partnered with the Chinese government to develop social welfare services for China’s most vulnerable children - the abandoned and disabled. Our reputation and relationships in China place us in an excellent position to not only provide homes and services for the neediest children, but also empower and train Chinese nationals to see lives saved, families supported, communities transformed and attitudes changed.
Today, ICC is working in 2 areas in China - Changsha and Hengyang in the Hunan Province. These projects are managed by local Chinese staff with the support from dedicated International volunteers.
Our Work:
ICC has worked in China for almost 25 years, it is probably the only organisation working with the greatest breadth in the area of orphan care.
Family-style Group Homes and Specialist Care Services
- Caring for abandoned children with disabilities
The Changsha Project, Hunan Province
ICC began our work in 1993 in Changsha, and established a
permanent presence there in 1997. We are now taking care of over 90 children and young adults who live in Centre-based or Community-based family-style group homes. Services include 24-hour residential care, medical care and surgeries, individualized rehabilitation and therapy, special education, life skills training, vocational training and recreational opportunities.
The Hengyang Project, Hunan Province
The Hengyang Project was established in 2005. It moved into a specially-built 5-storey Children’s Centre sponsored by the government in 2014. Currently, we are taking care of more than 160 children and youths living in family-style group homes. And we provide similar services as that in Changsha.
Family Support Services
- Keeping special needs families together
The Community Outreach Project is a ground-breaking project established by ICC in Changsha in 2008 to prevent abandonment in China. It works to provide family support services to hundreds of families living with children with disabilities.
Since its launch in 2008, we have worked with more than 300 families, providing access to training, counselling, parent support groups, respite care, physical and occupational therapy, special education, vocational training and financial aid.
