Birmingham City Church is a multicultural inner city church situated in the heart of Birmingham, the nation's second city. It has a congregation of over 1000 people and as such it is a vibrant and exciting church. Birmingham City Church is part of the Elim family of churches and would be counted as a resource church to others in the denomination, and to the other churches in the city.
BCC has a thriving and exciting children's ministry called 'BCC Kids' which runs on each Sunday. The children's ministry of BCC is a challenging part of this multi-cultural, multi-generational church. The size, dynamics and future vision for this area of work is at a promising stage in its progress.
The mission statement of BCC is 'Being Built Together', which indicates our ethos and purpose of involving all of our members in discipleship, so that they can disciple other people. The area of children's ministry is not different in this regard, in that we expect the children to become disciples and experience the joy of impacting others. A key value for our children's work is 'Children Matter' - we often remind ourselves of this because children simply do matter to all that God is doing today.
At present there are approximately 150 regular children under the age of 12 who attend, and another 100 who are visitors/have attended before. We aim to see that grow dramatically in the coming years and keep pace with the developments within the church. 'BCC Kids' includes music, stories, games, activities, worship, encounters, prayer and teaching. The teams offer pastoral help and spiritual guidance to many children. The structure of leadership is formed in three teams that work in conjunction together:
- Crèche 0-3's
- 3-7's (sectioned into 3-5's and 5-7's)
- 7-11
There is also a good link with the youth ministry, and development to help bring transition from ages 10-12.
Vision
BCCKids aims to:
ENGAGE the children of BCC - so that church and following Jesus captivates them.
IMPACT them with the teaching of Jesus, involving practical application.
RELEASE the children into their ministries by encouraging them to use their own gifts and talents.
In engaging, impacting and releasing the children, we seek to make them disciples of Jesus Christ.
Job Title: Head of Children's Ministry
Full time position, working staff member at BCC including evenings and weekend work
The type of person that would apply for this post would have LEADERSHIP skills to build teams - we are not just looking for an 'on the ground worker', but someone who can inspire others and lead. Our Children's Leader is to be VISIBLE, in that they are present for the workers throughout Sunday and available to parents - they would need to have a presence around the whole ministry. The Children's Leader would show ENTHUSIASM about the work, displaying a positive attitude and would always be ready to speak positively concerning the children's ministry, and in this sense we want to see a DYNAMIC and creative approach to the children's work. Along with the support of the leadership team, we are looking for someone who can take a STRATEGIC approach to the children's ministry, looking for the next developments of deepening and growth. Because this ministry is one of the largest in our church, we must emphasise that our Children's Leader is to be a proficient TEAM BUILDER. The Children's Leader will work hard in conjunction with the pastoral staff to take a PASTORAL view of the parents and children. We want to see that the Children's Leader has an outstanding WORK ETHIC.
