Chaplain for The Lantern
Cornerstone Baptist Church
The Lantern is one of three Sunday gatherings which make up Cornerstone Baptist Church. It is an outreach mission created by a partnership between Cornerstone BC and Leeds Vineyard. The Lantern is designed to be appropriate for those vulnerable people who exist on the margins of society. They are people who have experienced past trauma and have chaotic lives most now living in poverty, many sofa-surfing or sleeping rough and using drugs/alcohol as a coping mechanism. Over the last two and a half years the team has established a church with a welcoming, friendly and peaceful atmosphere. We provide a two-course hot meal. Following the meal there is a short service with a song, informal talk and prayer. Growing confidence in community means some people helping with set up and clearing away. Midweek there is a Pay it Forward scheme available through the Green House Cafe and a Pantry operating out of Vineyard House. Developing midweek support is an aspiration for The Lantern including opening up access to the Green House for guest to use the showers and offering support to access other agencies.
We are looking for a Chaplain for The Lantern who will be able to promote the spiritual welfare of the membership those of faith and no faith, especially those whose lives are marked by past trauma, chaotic living situations and substance dependence needs. Have oversight, support and recruitment of volunteers for the front of house and hospitality teams. To hold well-structured and supportive meetings with volunteers. Effectively access the citywide support opportunities to signpost people needing additional services via the existing agencies who can meet complex needs. To plan and lead Christian services, including teaching prayer, Bible reading and worship, in collaboration with The Lantern Leadership team.To increase awareness of this ministry within the partner churches and across the wider church community, encouraging others to serve and pray for this work. Creating and maintaining close working relationships with the CBC Ministry Team, Leeds Vineyard and other local churches
